Chill Out: Beauty Products To Help You Relax Before Bed

Sleep: we're obsessed with it. We're constantly boasting about how little we get ("We're just so busy") but we're all desperate for some good shuteye. We've been told to monitor our sleep via the 90-minute count, to fork out for lamps that replicate the rising sun, and to tailor our diet to aid a restful night. All this planning, counting and tracking is, well, exhausting.

While we're not claiming that a face mask and a few candles can cure serious insomnia, we know the restorative power of a bath, some essential oils and being head-to-toe relaxed. Commuting, that money you owe your partner, a tense meeting with Stu from HR, leaving the office late, housemates who don't pull their weight – we deal with stressful situations every day. Sometimes, the most effective way to unwind is to sink into hot water, take your time to really massage your legs and feet, and inhale lavender and rose – the smells that transport you to a more chilled-out place.

Click through to see the products we rely on to help us kick back, relax and slip into bed for a bloody good sleep.

This oily balm mask is divine. Take your time to work a thick layer into the skin before bed and you'll wake up with the smoothest, brightest skin.

Beauty Kitchen Abyssinian Oil Night Halo Potent Sleep Mask, £19.99, available from Holland & Barrett

1) This mask is really cute. 2) Blocking out any light makes for a cracking night's sleep. 3) It's made with silk (soft) and filled with lavender (will send you to the land of nod). All round? A great purchase.

Catherine & Jean Alexis Eye Mask, £20, available at Wolf & Badger

This balm is made with 99.8% natural ingredients, which is not something most brands can claim. Neroli and camomile make this a great anti-anxiety product as well as a sleep aid. Rub onto inner wrists and temples, and inhale – you'll feel calmer and begin to doze off in no time.

1001 Remedies Good Night Sleep Relaxing Balm, £29, available at Cult Beauty

Unlike traditional sleep-friendly products, this citrus number isn't laden with lavender. Himalayan crystal and sea salts relax muscles, while olive oil moisturises skin, and Melissa and Lemon Myrtle oils ease you into a relaxed state.

Cowshed Sleepy Cow Calming Bath Salts, £18, available at Cowshed

This 100% organic bar doubles up as a moisturiser and massage tool. Work into your tired limbs and let the lavender, wild orange and neroli do their thing. Research has linked neroli oil to reduced stress and increased serotonin levels, so it will lift your mind, too.

Lush Therapy Massage Bar, £6.50, available at Lush

This blend of 24 essential oils (including lavender, jasmine and Brazilian rosewood) is heavenly. Spraying a little on your wrists will make you feel like you're in a spa.

Neom Luxury Organics De-Stress On The Go Mist, £8, available at Selfridges

We love this trusty pillow spray. It's become routine to spray on our bed every evening (and even before a hangover nap at the weekend). Once you learn to associate the aromatherapeutic lavender, vetivert and chamomile with sleep, it becomes increasingly easy to nod off.

This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray £16, available at This Works

This balm is designed to ease muscle tension but we equally love dabbing it on pressure points before bed, or massaging into skin for a wind-down treat.

Neal's Yard Calming Temple Salve, £6.50, available at Neal's Yard

Everything from Aromatherapy Associates is fabulous. This is a bestseller and cools aches and pains. Apply to the back of your neck if a headache is keeping you from getting some rest.

Aromatherapy Associates De-Stress Muscle Gel, £24, available at Selfridges

This rollerball wonder calms the mind and reduces tension thanks to its blend of essential oils. Apply to temples, wrists and décolletage, breathe in and drift off.

This Works Stress Check Breathe In, £16, available at ASOS

For those who need a long soak to relax, this elixir is pure luxury. Elemis has brought out five new Life Elixir ranges, including bath elixir, candles and perfume oil. Calm is the one for before bed, with cedarwood, orange, patchouli and vetiver oil, to name a few.

Elemis Life Elixirs Sleep Bath & Shower Elixir, £55, available in May from Elemis

For those with a penchant for evening showers, this body wash is perfect for washing away the day's stresses. Hop into fresh PJs and you've got a good night's sleep ahead, my friend.

NIP+FAB De-Stress Blend Body Wash, £8.99, available at ASOS

We were sceptical about diffusers when we were younger but now we're sold. They're long-lasting, not too overpowering, and leave a room totally zen. This one, aptly named Calm, blends rose and geranium for the ultimate chill-out.

Neal's Yard Organic Aromatherapy Reed Diffuser, £23.50, available at Neal's Yard

There is nothing more indulgent than a candle (maybe a bath with candles), and we're hooked on this AA Relax candle. The warm, flickering glow combined with the West Indian bay and myrrh oils? Zzzzzz.

Aromatherapy Associates Relax Candle, £38, available at Space.NK

This moisturising French lavender and chamomile soap is so relaxing, and gorgeous enough to have a permanent spot on your bathroom sink.

Lush Serendipity Soap, £3.50, available at Lush

All of Cowshed's Knackered Cow products are lovely, but these mini candles are perfect for those who have trouble sleeping in a bed that isn't theirs. Or you can dot them around your house when you're home alone, for a full-on zen zone.

Cowshed Knackered Cow Relaxing Travel Candles, £26, available at Cowshed

This does the trick for the end of a long day when you're too tired to mess around with lotions and potions. The lather is super-creamy and skin is left so soft, all you have to do is roll into bed and let sleep take over.

Weleda Lavender Creamy Body Wash, £7.95, available from Weleda

This gorgeous oil smells of lavender and doesn't require a double cleanse (leaving you more time in bed). Wonderful.

Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil, £32, available at Kiehl's.
